Good Translation Q&A
Q: How is good translation done?

A: It is based on good original documents. The point is to avoid terminology as much as possible. In addition, it is important not to reduce a number of characters to save translation cost because it makes it difficult to communicate feelings or intention. Since translators do not understand situations of clients, they can only make assumptions based on what is written in the documents. It is recommended to have a third person check the documents if possible.
For example, luuk khon too in Thai means oldest in siblings, but it is not clear whether this person is oldest sister or brother. In addition, if names of Thai people are written in katakana in the documents, translators may not know spelling of actual names and thus may not be able to translate. For example, if the information is only available in katakana, it may not be possible for translators to judge whether it is man’s or woman’s names. This is especially difficult when the names are used for both men and women. Other information can be understood by reading the contents carefully, and it is necessary for translators to make assumptions of what is written. In such case, it takes very long time to translate. In some cases, it is necessary to ask clients to show original letters in Thai.

Q: Where can I ask for satisfactory translation?

A: I had translated for major companies, and in fact, there are not many Thai translators. Therefore, Thai people who are in Japan for only a short period of time (who are not familiar with situations in Japan) translate. However, it is preferable to ask someone who understands situations of both countries, or someone who has Japanese Language Proficiency Test, Level 1 if a person is Thai. But there are cases that Thai people may not be able to read some writings because of idiosyncrasy. Thus, it is safest to ask Thai related organizations or parties with many Thai people.

Q: Translation fee is expensive, isn’t it? Can it be cheaper?

A: Good translation is done by a pair of Japanese and Thai translators. For example, to translate letters from Japanese to Thai, the Japanese translator first translates them to Thai, and then the Thai translator makes a fair copy. The document containing 400 characters is “400 characters×8 yen = 3,200 yen”. A break down is as follows. It takes 1 hour to complete thorough translation. “2 people×hourly rate of 1,000 yen = 2,000 yen”, communication fee, estimation fee as well as typing and communication via email. It takes time and efforts to complete good translation, especially to translate from Japanese to Thai because of scanning and creating attachments. This is why translation fee is expensive. If translation is done with the price lower than this, it is not done by professionals. It is also possible that your documents are used for practice or quality goes down.
